Team Alignment & Effectiveness: Critical to Success

Successful organizations are built on high-performing teams and "teams of teams." Even the pioneers of innovation understood this vital principle.

Unfortunately, the daily rush to get things done can often obscure this vital principle. Managers sometimes forget to ask:

  • Is my team more than just a list of names on paper?

  • Is each member committed to the team or are most of them simply “along for the ride"?

  • Do they work together or do they work separately with only a veneer of team interaction?

  • Are they focused on the team’s success or on their own (individual) priorities?

Here at Anselm Group we know from experience that every high-performing team is built on a foundation of trust and alignment. But what do we mean by "alignment"?  Here's the answer:

Every team member has a distinct personality, and brings a unique set of skills, experience, expertise and emotions to the mix. These individual qualities may be aligned ("lined up") for team success, or they may be pointing in multiple different directions limiting the team's full potential. Alignment is the key to improving performance.

We're not talking about forcing people to march in "lock step" or abandoning individual initiative. Rather, we're talking about a shared commitment to teamwork and achieving common goals that fit your overall organization's mission.

Our objective is to help align those qualities in a precise and results-oriented way that is appropriate for your organization’s unique culture. Working in close partnership with your leaders and team members, we achieve this objective in three overall steps:

1. Objective team diagnostics using a web-based tool called IMAGE (Interpersonal Measurement and Group Effectiveness) to measure the key issues that determine a specific team’s effectiveness today. Unlike anecdotal information, these diagnostic tools provide reliable and in-depth insights into team members’ personality, as well as how they interact to create team dynamics and the team’s “fingerprint.” (See sample IMAGE report.)

2. Vector / Valance Analysis using PVA® 360 (Personality Vector Analysis) and TeamNav® to uncover patterns that hinder team commitment and effectiveness. This step acts as a reliable “bridge” between individual perceptions and actual group interactions. More importantly, it helps uncover the root causes of non-alignment as well as areas of team strength. (See sample PVA page.)

3. Specific Interventions to address problem areas and improve team effectiveness. These can include team workshops, one-on-one leadership training, culture strategy and small-group sessions that focus on a few key issues. We focus on priority behaviors that each team member can practice applying immediately with the twin goals of fundamentally improving their own effectiveness and the overall effectiveness of the team.

The interventions we recommend are always customized to your specific situation and challenges. In this way, Anselm Group combines the "soft skills" of interpersonal training with the "hard skills" of data-driven analysis. Follow-up services are always available, depending on client needs.
